Education

Quality schools in beautiful rural settings in our towns and small cities.

The Rutland Region has four excellent choices of colleges and universities: Castleton University, College of St. Joseph, Green Mountain College and Community College of Vermont.

Castleton University

For more than 225 years, Castleton has been helping students to realize their dreams through an educational approach that focuses on connecting with them as people inside and outside the classroom. It is Vermont’s first college and is the 18th oldest in the country. Current student/faculty is 14:1 and there are 1,900 full-time students and 300 part time students representing 19 countries. On the 165-acre campus, Castleton offers over 75 undergraduate programs and 11 graduate programs. Castleton has the longest history of service to Vermont and Vermonters of any college in the state.

College of St. Joseph

Founded in 1956, College of St. Joseph is a small, independent, nonprofit Catholic institution located in the heart of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Our idyllic 117-wooded acre campus sits on the edge of Rutland’s city limits, providing a comfortable walk to both a vibrant downtown and several recreation areas.

CSJ offers 20 undergraduate degree programs, 12 graduate programs, and professional development opportunities, with a family-like campus environment and unparalleled faculty-student interaction. Our diverse community includes students from across the country and highly-qualified instructors and staff.

College of St. Joseph was named a top 100 “Best Bang for the Buck” school by Washington Monthly in 2015 and was ranked in the top 15 percent in The Economists’s College rankings.

Community College of Vermont

CCV Rutland is the Community College of Vermont’s second largest academic center in the state, serving over 700 students each semester. They take great pride in providing the highest quality of service and attention to each student. Honoring individuality and diversity, and spending time with each person discussing career goals, course and program placement, financial aid options, and overall marketability in the workplace.

CCV is conveniently located in the heart of Rutland City and celebrates cultural ties with many educational, business, and industry neighbors. Its convenient location, combined with an array of course offerings, affords students rich opportunities to become contributing members of the local community.

Green Mountain College

Green Mountin college’s curriculum is built on a framework of social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The first of its kind in the U.S., it remains the model for Environmental Liberal Arts (ELA). Regardless of major, you and your peers complete the 37-credit ELA sequence, a cross-disciplinary program that prepares you for a career in today’s fastest-growing fields, including the green jobs sector. Ranked #2 by Princeton Review’s Top 50 Green Colleges, Green Mountain College is where tomorrow’s pioneers start to build a better world.

Vermont is amazing and you have hundreds of pristine acres to play and learn in. But beyond beauty, Vermont is a way of life: down to earth, genuine, original. A place where people lead rather than follow, and where you can be part of a long tradition of social and environmental activism. VT ranks as the healthiest and best-educated state in the country, and #3 for “most livable.” All of which makes Vermont the perfect spot to spend the next four years of your life.
